Iceland: The Land of Fire and Ice

Welcome to the land of ice and fire. Where the sun and moon can rise and fall in the same frame, glaciers and geysers are larger than life, and icy wilderness and craters tempt you to adventure. Transport yourself to another world and allow the northern lights and the surrounding galaxies to capture your imagination. Prepare for a 8D7N journey to have your breath taken away – this is a landscape where no filters are ever required.

This journey outline is by no means fixed. As the traveller takes centre stage in our planning – from the type of lodging to daily activities – your journey will be crafted to suit you.

Day by Day Highlights

Day 1
Arrival in Iceland

Arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), where you will be met by your guide in the arrival hall once you come out through customs.

Drive to the Blue Lagoon for the ultimate natural spa experience to unwind after your flight. Continue on to Reykjavik, and check-in to your city centre hotel.

The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa, is one of Iceland’s most unique and popular attractions. The lagoon is rich in a unique combination of natural minerals which gives the lagoon its soft milky aquamarine colour. Enjoying a bath in the warm water of the lagoon, surrounded by black lava, is simply the perfect way to relax.

Day 2
Whale Watching and Reykjavik

Walk down to the harbour for a whale and puffin watching experience. Cruise into the beautiful Faxafloi bay and marvel at minke whales, white-beaked dolphins and humpback whales swimming in the waters – and more!

Enjoy refreshments during the experience (total duration of 2 – 3 hours), with the option of adding sea angling as an activity on board.

Continue to a private local gourmet food and wine walking tour of Reykjavik in the afternoon. Enjoy this compact city and its people, culture and history, best experienced while on foot.

Day 3
Descend into a Volcano

Enjoy a relaxing morning before driving to Thrihnjukagigur Volcano for a very special experience.

The dormant Thrihnukagigur Volcano is a unique natural phenomenon. By setting up the necessary gear and equipment, we’ve created an experience for you that opens the door to a whole new world. Explore the beauty of the crater – in the various colourations found inside it and its enormous (and to some extent intimidating!) size. For context, the ground area of the chamber is equivalent to almost three full-sized basketball courts and the height is such that it would easily fit the full-sized Statue of Liberty. So make no mistake – it’s huge! Take a moderate 45–50 minute hike (to get to the crater) and descend 120 meters/400 feet to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift.

Head back to Reykjavik and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 4
Golden Circle and Glacier by Super Jeep

The Golden Circle is the name given to a 190 mile (300 kilometer) circular route which encompasses many of Iceland’s most famous landmarks.

Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World heritage site and incidentally the location of the world’s first parliament. The park is a site of historical, cultural and geological importance and is one of the most popular destinations in Iceland. It lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates are drifting apart – which causes cracks and canyons to be formed in the area.

Continue on a one-hour snowmobile excursion on the top of Langjokull Glacier, the second largest ice-cap in Iceland. It begins at the snowmobile basecamp by Skalpi and goes up to the Jarlhettur mountain peaks and surrounding areas.

Stop at Gullfoss Waterfall on your way back, an iconic waterfall in Iceland offering a spectacular view of the force and beauty of untouched nature. The water plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon which walls reach up to 70 meters in height. On a sunny day, a shimmering rainbow can be seen over the falls.

Day 5
ATV Biking on Volcanoes

Proceed to ATV location which is about 1 hour away.

This 2-hour ATV experience takes you between two of Iceland‘s most famous and notorious volcanoes, Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull. You will be crossing small rivers and visiting waterfalls and caves along the way. From your base in Lambalækur, we head to the North where you will experience driving in riverbeds and along less travelled paths west of Mt. Þríhyrningur.

Take a stop at a cave which was once inhabited by Irish monks located by the river Fiská. This stop offers a great view over the famous Hekla volcano and Mt. Tindfjoll. At the cave, light a fire where you can treat yourselves with cup of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Just outside the cave entrance stands a rock formation believed to be home of elves – with a little bit of magic (and imagination), one may even make contact with the inhabitants!

In the summer, enjoy salmon or trout fishing in the afternoon. Tungufljot is a beautiful river in Iceland where you can get good catches in beautiful surroundings with the waterfall Faxi as the crown. The river is slightly bigger than East and West Rangá and is rated as a large river by Icelandic standards. Its waters are gin-clear and offer endless pools for fly fishing.

Day 6
Thorsmork Nature Reserve

Today you will go on a off-roading experience to Thorsmork Nature Reserve. This is one of the more popular hiking areas in Iceland with truly stunning nature. Deep valleys between glaciers and high mountains give this area a very dramatic look.

Grab this opportunity to enjoy the ride of Super Jeep which will take you on to river crossings and valleys.

Day 7
Horseback Riding and Fontana Spa

Start your day with a unique experience of the healing powers of the natural geothermal spring with sauna, combined with horse riding in the afternoon. Soak in a natural pool, listen to the bubbling hot spring in the steam rooms, or for the venturesome, take a dip in the refreshing lake.

In the afternoon, embark on a short horse riding experience set against the beautiful landscape in the Ölfus area, where you will get to know the friendly Icelandic horses and Icelandic naturescapes. This is a great experience, even if you are a beginner and/or travelling with children. Drive back to Reykjavik.
